This year, Organize Your Home Day falls on January 14. This is a day to set aside time to go through the things that are cluttering your space that you may no longer need. However, organizing a home is no easy feat. It takes time and effort, but we'll walk you through some simple steps to help you get started!

Set aside time

Planning is key. Make a list of everything you'd like to do in order of importance (for instance, clean out your closet before putting up shelves) and ensure that whichever goals you set are realistic. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you need it!

Tackle one room at a time

You’ll first want to decide which room or area of your home you'll focus on for the day. You don't have to tackle the whole house, but it's important that you start with one small section of your living space and move forward from there. If you're overwhelmed by the scope of organization, break things down into smaller tasks that are more manageable.

Label boxes and containers

If you’re putting items into storage, make sure to label your boxes on the top and sides. Better yet, use clear or opaque storage tubs! Either way, you’ll have an idea of what’s inside without digging through the whole container. Labeling can be fun with a label maker, but it’s just as effective with a pen and some tape.

Utilize furniture with built-in storage

Finding clever ways to store the belongings you don’t use all the time is an easy way to cut down on clutter. Rolling boxes that fit underneath your bed are great for storing out-of-season clothing to keep your closet organized. Ottomans with a lid are great for blankets and remotes. Storage benches are wonderful for shoes or outdoor accessories and make them easy to find when you need them.

Donate what you no longer need

Donated items don't have to be new. If you have something that's in good condition, but you'll never use it again, consider donating it to a charity.

Organizing your home can be a great way to start the New Year. It’s a good feeling when you know where everything is, and it helps reduce stress if you know you can find things quickly whenever you need them.
