Many times, I have wondered how I can better ensure that I achieve my goals and reach the outcome I am pursuing. Of course, outcomes being pursued can vary widely depending on the individual and each demand their own tactics. However, I have come to understand, over time, that there are some standard steps required in almost every instance of pursuing a goal and getting the desired outcome.
First, make sure the outcome desired is really the one you want. Really think it through and make sure that there are no repercussions that you are not willing to accept in pursuit of this outcome.
Second, make sure the outcome you are pursuing fits with the overall direction of your strategy and doesn’t—or, more importantly, won’t—take on a life of its own. Don’t get unnecessarily distracted from your main purpose.
Third, build consensus among all those who will be responsible for the implementation of pursuing this outcome and get everyone—your team—to embrace it as their own.
Fourth, outline specifically what must be done to achieve the desired outcome. Set deadlines as needed and assign tasks to team members (if working in a group). Most importantly, check again that what you are pursuing is really what you want.
Finally, make it happen as quickly as possible so you can continue forward and pursue your next goal and the desired outcome. Keep in mind that success is cumulative.
I hope you are enjoying your summer.
