Although warm weather gives you an opportunity to spend more time outside on your property, it also attracts many insects that can quickly ruin the fun.
While most insects in North America are harmless, others can carry diseases and can actually be very harmful to your health. To keep bugs from wrecking your time outdoors, Realty Times has some advice on how to combat this issue at the source.
Eliminate standing water
Mosquitoes are possibly one of the most obnoxious and harmful summer bugs. These critters breed in shallow standing water. This can include birth baths, kiddy pools, rain puddles and fountains. This does not include swimming pools since chlorine and other chemicals instantly kill mosquito eggs.
It can be difficult to eliminate mosquito eggs since they only take 48 hours to hatch, but once they emerge they take roughly two weeks to morph into adult mosquitoes. It is during this stage that they are most vulnerable.
To keep them from hatching on your property, make sure to change the freestanding water in your birdbaths, kiddy pools and fountains at least once a week. Do this and you could be surprised how quickly this problem shrinks.
Manicure your lawn
Overgrown lawns and flowerbeds often serve as breeding hot spots for insects. Keep these trimmed and well kept and you could ruin their chances for reproduction.
Mowing your lawn weekly could also help eliminate the issue. However, if you do not have time to do this, consider hiring a landscaping company to come occasionally to keep your property in shape. At the very least, pay one of the neighborhood kids to mow your lawn. Not only will this kill insects, it can also improve your curb appeal and keep your property looking sharp.
Once bugs make it to your property, it does not take long before they might infiltrate your home. To prevent this, consider installing screens on all of your windows and doors. This way you can still enjoy the weather on a warm summer’s night without all the buzzing and bites.
Additionally, if you want to take this concept a step further, you might want to think about utilizing and FHA refinance to free up some extra cash and install a screened-in porch. Outdoor spaces are highly coveted in today’s housing market, and this could be a hot selling point in the future.
There are many potential projects if you’re interested in improving your home value. Refinancing your current home loan into a new FHA fixed-rate loan through Freedom Mortgage may allow you to free up money to make positive home renovations.
