At Freedom Mortgage, we pride ourselves on helping our customers realize the American Dream. An essential element in achieving this dream is the “Freedoms” that have been afforded to us, and tomorrow we celebrate those liberties by commemorating National Freedom Day.
National Freedom Day, first officially recognized in 1948, pays tribute to the signing of the 13th Amendment by President Abraham Lincoln. On February 1, 1865, President Lincoln put an end to slavery in the United States.
The movement to recognize the event as a National Holiday began by Major Richard Robert Wright Sr., who was born a slave in 1855 Georgia. Wright was just 10 years old when slavery was finally abolished. He spent the remainder of his life taking advantage of the Freedoms that were granted to him on that day.
After becoming the highest ranking African American to serve in the military during the Spanish-American War and serving as President of Georgia State Industrial College for Colored Youth, Wright moved to Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, he enrolled in Wharton Business School before launching the Philadelphia Citizens and Southern Bank and Trust Company, the only Northern Bank owned by an African American and the first African American Trust Company.
Before his death in 1947, Wright began a grassroots campaign to pay homage to the day he was given his freedom. After spending years meeting with national and local leaders to gain their support for this memorial, it was finally signed into law by President Truman in June 1948.
National Freedom Day 2013
Commemorated with a Wreath Laying Ceremony each year at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Wright’s work and dedication paved the way for what would eventually became Black History Month in 1976. Tomorrow’s National Freedom Day ceremony begins at 10:30 am. Please take a moment to join the Freedom Team in showing thanks for the Freedoms that have been bestowed upon us equally.
Readers, share with us which freedom are you most proud of as an American? Are you celebrating National Freedom Day?
